I was paging through the laptop music stash today when I noticed how many songs have a title that begins with the word “my.” Hot damn, I thought, there’s a blog post right there, and I ain’t lying.
“My World”/Bee Gees. Since these are “my” songs, let’s begin with one of my 45s from about a million years ago (1972, actually), from the Bee Gees’ not-yet-disco-kings period. It’s a pretty good record, although the refrain is a little shaky: “My world is our world/And this world is your world/And your world is my world/And my world is your world/Is mine.”
“My Foolish Heart”/Bill Evans. The ultimate jazz ballad. If you want to know why I dig Bill Evans, listen to this.
“My One and Only Love”/MFSB. Another jazz ballad standard, best known in a version by saxophonist John Coltrane and vocalist Johnny Hartman, recorded in 1963. But where Coltrane and Hartman were sensitive, the MFSB version is sexy, which can be a very good thing indeed.
“My Pledge of Love”/Joe Jeffrey Group. On your radio this week in 1969, and making it sound insanely great every time it came on.
“My Baby Just Cares for Me”/Nina Simone. Originally recorded in 1958, this song remained obscure until it was used in a perfume commercial in the late 80s. I’m not a big fan of Nina Simone’s warble-around-the-precise-note style, but I can ignore it here because this tune swings so hard. Here’s the video that accompanied its 1987 single release in the UK.
Coming tomorrow: An update on our plans for Vinyl Record Day, which is one week from Tuesday.
