It has been a beautiful Saturday here in southern Wisconsin. Since I will be in a football coma for most of the next 24 hours, here’s ample linkage to get you through:
Let’s kick it off with this: My radio station, The Lake, does a different music feature every weekend. It’s a Long Songs Weekend through tomorrow, where every hour starts with something six minutes plus. We’ve launched a MySpace page for the Long Song Preservation Society. The Society’s blurb is a collaborative effort between The Lake’s PD and a certain online writer whose style you may recognize.
The Lake and I got a bit of love from Dan Kelley at Classic Rock FM earlier this week, and I want to give some back: If I were programming a classic-rock station, I’d be reading Dan all the time. If you like inside baseball, radio style, check him out.
Jason Hare’s Chart Attack feature has been in 70s mode the last couple of weeks. The latest edition takes you back to my favorite year, 1976, and hits it out of the park. In another post, Jason explains why Jefitoblog has been out of commission for a while. The news isn’t good.
Our friend Charlie from Bloggerhythms pitches in by sending an Ed Sullivan Show clip from an alternate universe.
Elsewhere, Timothy Ferris writes about the record attached to the Voyager spacecraft, launched 30 years ago this week. It features sounds of Earth, including human languages, and songs by Blind Willie Johnson, Louis Armstrong, and Chuck Berry. The Voyager record inspired Saturday Night Live to suggest that the first message we would receive from aliens might be “Send more Chuck Berry.” Mephisto’s Rock Gems has done just that.
