To Willie and Spiritof67...didn't Willie McGee scale the fence in centerfield and rob Gorman Thomas of a home run in one of the games?

Personal to JB....a footnote to "I Jock, Therefore I am"....it was 28 years ago this weekend that I lost my "amateur" status as a jock and did it for the money. I made my debut on WXXQ/Freeport, Illinois doing an overnight airshift. I earned $20.10 ($3.35 per hour, which was 35 cents more than the minimum wage in 1979). The first song I played: "2112" by Rush...WXXQ was a Top 40 station that really rocked out at night.

Why did the Brewers lose the '82 World Series? Simple. Rollie Fingers was unable to pitch due to an arm injury. Otherwise, the outcome would have been totally different. As a result, I still stick pins in my Bob McClure doll on a regular basis. :)

A "Hello" to Spiritof67...that St Louis Cardinals team featured Bruce Sutter, Keith Hernandez, Darrell Porter, and Willie McGee. McGee was outstanding in that World Series. The Cards were managed by Whitey Herzog, whose presence alone was worth a couple of wins. Yeah...the Brewers were really good and, as far as hitting for power and dominating their opponents, I thought they were the better team, but the Cardinals used their great speed, Whitey's attention to detail and the relief pitching of Bruce Sutter to become champions. That was a GREAT series!

For me, the summer of 1982 ranks as one of the lowest points in pop music history. The rock artists that were getting airplay had seen better days and reminded me of people who overstay their welcome at a party. It was an era that was overdue for change.

In St. Louis, where I live, our radio stations were mired in extremely bland programming: two AOR's that played endless blocks of Bad Company, Styx, REO Speedwagon, etc., FOUR Adult Contemporary radio stations that sought to play the most Kenny Rogers and Neil Diamond hits as possible, and NO Top-40 stations. It was our urban station (Majic 108) that played some Top-40 hits that fit their format.

While the first half of 1982 wasn't so great, the latter half showed some promise. It seemed like the entire culture shifted that fall, and a number of artists that extremely popular were suddenly out of favor. If any song ever reminded me of that shift, it has to be Joe Jackson's "Steppin' Out."

And Shark, as a St. Louisan I'm sure we'll disagree with the outcome of the World Series, LOL. But I will say that the Brewers had a great team though.

"Paperlate" by Genesis was a good song, as was, "Stone Cold" by Rainbow, and "If You Want My Love" by Cheap Trick. I have a 45 of the Rolling Stones great live version of "Going To A Go-Go." I'm surpised "Valley Girl" by Frank Zappa and Moon Unit Zappa didn't make the chart. (Yeah, right!) We were playing that one at WAHC in Oshkosh, Wisconsin in the summer of 1982. That was also the summer of "Harvey's Wallbangers"...the Milwaukee Brewers team that zoomed into first place and won the AL East on the last day of the season, then came from behind to beat the California Angels the American League pennant only to lose to St. Louis in the '82 World Series. I loved the summer of '82!

Hey, you've given us so much good music over the years... it's about time some of us return the favor, right? Here's a not-so-hot MP3 of "Out of Work":
