What a wonderful post, thank you!... Not sure if you remember this, but even Motown got in on the craze (perhaps a bit early, in '81). They put out a couple of 'Greatest Hits/Collector's Series' single LPs from the usual suspects (Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Jackson Five) with one side mixed with a new drumline, and actually sped up slightly. Of course, no one would've known, because none of the LPs mentioned that one side of hits was actually a 12-minute medley. None of the albums charted, and the medleys weren't released as singles, but it's surprising Motown didn't jump on that bandwagon anyway.

Anyway, thanks again for the fine research and memories.

Hell yes, JB. I've been waiting for a post about the Stars on 45 medleys. (In fact, for some reason, I thought you had covered it once before?) I'm glad I don't have to write it!

The best thing about the medley craze for me was that it led to Weird Al Yankovic's polka-style medleys (with "Polkas On 45" coming out ~1984).

"Swing the Mood" ... I had the cassette single of that one and damn near played it to death. I heard it awhile back and was like, "meh" - funny how time changes things.

I'm groovin' on "The Best Disco In Town," but I don't know where my leisure suit is! (I actually had one, kind of cobalt blue. Shudder!)
