Loved the music, but HATED HATED HATED the videos...way too much exposure for my taste.

My favorite album of theirs was always their debut. I really liked the guitar on that album and "Some of my lies are true" is my absolute favorite song of theirs.

I was going to post this on my blog, but thought that people reading your post may appreciate it more.

This is a Huey Lewis bootleg from 1982. Very nice sound quality! Enjoy!

JB, have you seen this article?

http://www.sfweekly.com/2005-08-03/news/a-very-special-concert/

It made me respect Huey Lewis and the News even more. I don't like a lot of their hits as much as I used to (although I did rediscover "I Want a New Drug" last summer and like it quite a bit now), but they had fun in their videos, which counts for something, and I have no doubt that they deliver concert. Plus "The Power of Love" and "Back in Time" are all-time classics as far as I'm concerned.

I saw Huey and the News perform at a winery here in Northern California a few summers back, and they were terrific. They're the antithesis of rock snobbery -- they played all the crowd-pleasing big hits with a lot of heart (no pun intended), brought two raffle winners up on stage to sit in with them on drums and guitar, and sounded as good as they did 20-plus years earlier. For me, it was kind of strange being surrounded by "older" fans sipping pinot noir on the lawn, but it didn't matter. The band delivered. Go see them if you get the chance.

Yes, they DO put on a hell of a show. Despite Reaganomics, preppy clothing, and BAD Packer football, the 1980's had good things, too like: being in my 20's, NBC's Thursday Night Line-up, and Huey Lewis & the News. JB heard me say it, and I'll say it again: Huey Lewis and the News was the RIGHT BAND at the RIGHT TIME for the RIGHT AUDIENCE. It certainly didn't hurt that MTV and VH1 came along at the same time. Huey Lewis and the News capitalized on it. They were the one band in the 1980's that made listening to Top 40 music on the radio a lot of fun.

Great tracks and thoughts. I'm with Kevin. Huey Lewis gets a bad rap that I think is by and large undeserved. I keep telling myself I'm going to go see them live sometime soon. I'm sure they still put on a hell of a show.

You articulated what I was formulating while I read this entry - that Huey was essentially a bar band that made it huge! How many other bar bands made it? There are a few, but in the 80's, it was Huey's turn.

Critics be damned! They get their name from what they do - criticize!

Somebody was buying their albums if they not only went gold, but then platinum! I dislike the naysayers who revel while being pompous and look down their noses, while the 'now' or 'happening, or 'cool' or [fill in something contemporary] bands sell a few thousand copies, get grand reviews in Rolling Stone and become the critics 'darling - only to be pumping my gas at the local Getty a few years later.

If only they could get residuals from Huey's sales!

And hey - I'll spend the cash to see Huey - in a bar!
